Ilya Kalinin

Associate professor in the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. Petersburg State University. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal Neprikosnovennyj zapas: Debaty o politike i kul’ture [Emergency ration: debates on politics and culture] published by the New Literary Observer in Moscow. He has recently published on nostalgic modernization, the history of Russian literary criticism, and the Formalist school of literary theory.

    The author argues that the equation of culture and natural resources has become a fundamental metaphor of the official patriotic discourse of identity in contemporary Russia. This conceptualization of the past frames nation building and state construction, the “nostalgic modernization”.
