Markus Huss, Associate Professor in German Literary Studies at Stockholm University, and member of Baltic Worlds’ Advisory Council (Chair between 2018 and 2022) has sadly passed away at the age of 43. He was immensely appreciated among his colleagues and friends and beloved by his family.

As a researcher his focus was literary multilingualism, intermediality, German and Swedish 20th century literature and exile literature. He also explored both the role of literature in approaching the shadows of past traumas, and its role of literature in contemporary times of war and crisis.

In May 2014 Markus defended his dissertation Motståndets akustik. Språk och (o)ljud hos Peter Weiss 1946–1960, [The Acoustics of Resistance. Language and Noise in Peter Weiss 1946–1960]. It investigates Peter Weiss’ return to German as literary language. Huss was also author of several publications, including a well-received novel (2022) on the writings of Kurt Tucholsky.

Markus Huss was Baltic Worlds’ first guest editor in 2012, together with Kaisa Kaakinen and Jenny Willner, for the theme-section “Dislocating Literature” presenting six essays on transnational literature and literary studies in the Baltic Sea region. As Chair he wasalso the person behind the successful process to list Baltic Worlds in Scopus.

Markus Huss was a gentle, knowledgeable and reliable friend of Baltic Worlds – for me as editor, for all members of the council, and for many, many more. He is deeply missed.
