Kristian Gerner (b. 1942), esteemed historian and emeritus professor of history at Lund University, passed away on April 2, 2026, in Lund, Sweden, at the age of 83.
A leading scholar of Eastern and Central Europe, Gerner devoted his life to exploring the region’s history and complexities. Through his research, teaching, and public engagement, he became one of Sweden’s leading experts on Eastern Europe, particularly on matters concerning Russia and the post-Soviet world.
He will be remembered for his deep commitment to understanding Eastern Europe in all its diversity and historical depth, and for bringing its histories, cultures, and political transformations to wider audiences. His work helped illuminate the region’s past and present, leaving a lasting contribution to the study and understanding of Eastern Europe.
